March the 8th is expected to be a crucial date for the Broward County as the issue of Slot gambling legalization is set to be determined. The polls will be full of voters who could potentially redeem the destitute racetracks and prompt the establishment of flourishing casino business with annual revenues estimated to reach $1 billion.
Voters will not be exposed to any operational details of slot machine gaming, such as the number of machines, the hours of operation, the tax, and what share of revenues will be donated to education, since it is yet to be decided by State legislators. Special referendum was set by the county commissioners after the deal with gaming industry regarding the necessary law enforcement expenses was resumed.
Mayor Kristin Jacobs voted against slots and vowed to campaign against the issue. Other gambling opponents and animal rights activists braced with politicians such as Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle and Davie Mayor Tom Truex. Broward School Board members stood up against the referendum stating that it is quite an obscure matter when voters have absolutely no idea as to the amount of money that will actually go to education. The referendum was however, approved by the commissioners and officials are working out another referendum to allow slots at their three gaming sites.
