New Slots Casino Initiative Launched in Washington D.C.
A political action group supporting slot machines in Washington, D.C., recently launched a petition campaign for the construction of a slots casino in the city. The group, backed by Shawn Scott, a businessman based in the U.S. Virgin Islands, reportedly needs to gather at least 19,000 D.C. resident signatures for the slots initiative to make it to the November ballot.
In 2004, Scott had already supported a similar initiative for the legalization of slot machines in Washington, but at the time, D.C. Board of Elections ruled that the signatures gathered for the aforementioned drive were either forged or improperly collected. Following such a ruling, the issue never made it to the ballot.
Nevertheless, slots promoters were reported as saying that, this time, they would make sure that there would be no election law violations. The proposed casino would offer as many 3,500 slot machines.
