Daniel G. Johnson, a resident of Las Vegas, was recently sentenced to a 33-month prison term for the attempt to rob the IRS of more than $200,000. The suspect reportedly conducted his fraudulent activities from ... a prison cell! The US Attorney's Office stated that, in his 2001 tax return, Johnson falsely reported a $1,3 million slots win, asking the IRS for a $208,000 tax refund.
At the time of the scam, Johnson was already serving a one-and-a-half-year sentence at the Nevadan Marana Community Correctional Treatment Facility after he was found guilty of forging counterfeit money orders. The slots revenue claim raised the suspicion of the IRS computer system and an investigation was launched into the tax refund claim. The payment was, therefore, put on hold until the scam was discovered.
