Pennsylvania May Produce Additional Standalone Slots Parlor License
A prominent Democratic legislator recently announced that he may propose an amendment to Pennsylvania's 2004 slots gambling law to secure a standalone slot machine parlor for either Beaver or Lawrence counties. Lawmaker Michael R. Veon said that due to certain setbacks in issuing a harness track slots license in western Pennsylvania, the two aforementioned counties should be allowed to operate slot machines without a racing license.
The setbacks mentioned by Veon involve the Pennsylvania State Harness Racing Commission, that has already rejected the applications of the two different companies that expressed an aspiration to develop tracks in Beaver and Lawrence counties.
According to Veon, the slots license should be set aside for western Pennsylvania because other slot machine licenses are likely to be awarded to companies seeking to develop gambling venues in eastern Pennsylvania. Also, under the two-year-old slots law, if no organization applies for the slots license that is set aside for one of Pennsylvania's racetracks, the board is entitled to award that slots license to an applicant that does not have a racing license.
