New Jersey Gaming Regulators Consider Handheld Slot Machines
The New Jersey Casino Control Commission is currently considering a proposal to allow the operation of handheld gambling devices to be used in the public spaces of Atlantic City casinos. In addition to these wireless gambling devices, regulators are also mulling high-tech downloadable slot machines that would enable local gaming venues to customize their slot operations with the touch of a button.

Sen. Barbara Buono, chairwoman of the New Jersey Senate's Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee, said that she expects legislation on mobile slots games to be introduced towards the end of 2006. A test run of downloadable slots is currently scheduled for late this year or early 2007.

Such a measure is already underway in Nevada, where the state's gaming regulators are expected to approve rules for the wireless devices later this month. While actual availability to patrons is likely to take several more months, Nevada is expected to allow wireless slots gaming poolside and in casino-hotel restaurants. The future rules will include a series of safeguards to protect against cheating and gambling by minors.

Nevertheless, there are some casino industry insiders who do not believe that handheld gaming devices are such a good idea. State Senator Nicholas Asselta, a member of the committee, was reported as saying that the introduction of the new slots technology could threaten the jobs of gaming industry employees, and also pave way for illegal online casinos.
