It was recently reported that city officials in Plainville, Massachusetts, are supporting a proposed legislation that, if approved, would authorize the installation and operation of slot machines at the state's four racetracks. The officials maintain that by operating slots, Plainville, the host community of the Plainridge Racecourse, would collect up to $1 million in yearly revenues.
The proposal to allow the operation of 2,000 slot machines at the state racetracks was already passed by the Senate, and is currently pending in the House. However, since many House leaders are reportedly not enthusiastic about the slots measure, the issue is not likely to be discussed before the end of the current session. Also, Governor Mitt Romney said that he opposes any expansion of gambling activities in Massachusetts.
Representative Daniel Bosley, a veteran player in gambling issues, was reported as saying that the state is not expected to benefit from slot machines. According to Bosley, the government would have to use the slots money to cover numerous expenses, for example, controlling crime related to expanded gambling activities all over the state. Thus far, the future of slots in Massachusetts is currently uncertain.
