According to a recent report, “No Slots for Me!,” a group of gambling opponents in Maine, has failed in its current effort to recruit the 50,519 signatures required in order to force a referendum on slots in 2006, before Tuesday's deadline. However, the group has already submitted another application for a second referendum drive.
If the new referendum petition is approved, slots opponents would have another year to gather the required number of signatures. According to Julie Flynn, deputy secretary of state in charge of elections, the group could still get the slots issue on the November 2006 ballot if they succeed in collecting more than 50,000 new signatures.
In 2003, voters approved legislation allowing slots operation across Maine, but under a later amendment to the law, Bangor is the only city eligible to run slot machines.
