Florida legislative official Rep. Randy Johnson has recently introduced a proposal that, if approved, would allow voters to change their minds regarding the decision to legalize slot machine operations in Broward County.
Despite the constitutional amendment approved last November, slot machines have not yet been installed in the four authorized gaming venues in Broward, as state lawmakers have been unable to procure the relevant slots regulations. Although an appeals court ruled that pari-mutuel venues may install slots even before regulations are passed in the legislature, these gaming establishments are likely to wait for proper legislation to be adopted.
Johnson reportedly maintained that the slots issue must be reexamined entirely. According to Johnson, despite all the positive outcomes expected by slots supporters, slot machines are likely to have an irreversible negative impact on their hosting communities. They are expected to increase crime and cause zoning problems.
Although Senator Steven Geller was reported as saying that Johnson's new resolution has no chance of being approved, nothing is certain, as Senate president Tom Lee has said that he would support Johnson.
