Debate on Slots in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania Continues, Councilman Donchez Indecisive
The debate over whether or not to allow the construction and operation of a slots casino at the former Bethlehem Steel site in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, continues. Opponents of the idea maintain that the potential slots gaming venue would only aggravate existing social problems, while also generating many others. Supporters, on the other hand, claim that such a venue would give a boost to the local economy, and save the former Bethlehem Steel buildings.

The majority of Bethlehem City Council members are rather clear on their standing regarding the slots casino issue. Councilmen Gordon Mowrer and Joseph Leeson Jr. proposed to ban slots, and they received support from Councilman Ismael Arcelay. However, Councilwomen Jean Belinski and Magdalena Szabo, and Council President Michael Schweder indicated that they favor the idea of having slots around.

The only Council member who has thus far remained indecisive over slots is Robert Donchez. On the one hand, Donchez reportedly feels encouraged to vote in favor of the idea to operate slots in Bethlehem, due to the potential economic development that the entire area is expected to experience. On the other hand, however, he is reluctant to do so, as he is reportedly concerned with the possibility that real estate developers might not carry out their current promises.
