Policemen Will Serve Jail Time for Illegally Confiscating, Reselling Slot Machines
Two South African policemen who illegally confiscated slot machines, and then tried to sell them, were convicted and sentenced to prison terms by the Wynberg regional court. The two, a sergeant and a constable, were both convicted of corruption, forgery, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice.
Sergeant John Thomas will serve 15 years, despite sentences totaling 112 years, as the local magistrate ruled that the sentences will be served concurrently. Constable André John Lekas will likewise serve his jail terms concurrently, bringing his jail time down from 28 years to seven. The policemen raided at least two shops while off-duty, using falsified warrants, and then attempted to sell the machines they had confiscated.
