It was recently reported that as a part of its lawsuit settlement with the state of New Mexico, Pojoaque Pueblo tribe, which operates the Cities of Gold Casino, finally agreed to pay the state $24 million in back payments for taxes on slots revenues.
According to Attorney General Patricia Madrid, the slots venue was defying an agreement made in 1977, providing that it was required to pay 16% of its net slot machine income to the state.
In 2001, revised gaming compacts were signed, decreeing that tribes must pay only 8% of their slot machine revenues. It is precisely this agreement that Pojoaque Pueblo will now sign.
