Although New York State Senator Nicholas Spano’s bill, which proposed allocating funds from future video slots at the Yonkers Raceway to city educational establishments, was recently passed in the Senate, it failed to obtain the approval of the committee in the Assembly. The bill was reportedly opposed by the committee's Democrats.
In response to his bill’s rejection, Spano reportedly said that Democrats opposed his proposal, because they want slots to finance the New York Campaign for Fiscal Equity settlement.
According to Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, who sponsored the proposal, Democrats objected the bill due to their determination to treat the video slot machines' hosting communities as any others. Nevertheless, Phil Amicone, Yonkers Mayor, is reportedly hopeful that the state legislative authorities will reexamine their decision by next year.
