In the coming days, mangers of the Yonkers Raceway, New York, will close the facility for about a year, in order to renovate the site. Among other attractions such as a new food court and an entertainment lounge, the raceway will be adding a 120,000-square-foot building in which approximately 5,500 slot machines are to be installed and operated.
With venue operators wishing to turn the facility into a “racino,” a racetrack where one can enjoy different casino games, such as slot machines, many Yonkers residents and local business owners are conflicted regarding the matter. Some of them welcome the future racino, believing that it will boost the local economy, while others fear the chaos and heavy traffic that might be caused by the influx of visitors.
Also, New York legislators are considering a proposition to allocate as much as $10 million, from revenues produced by slot machines at the racino, to Yonkers educational establishments.
