A Broward County Circuit judge, Leroy Moe, recently ruled in favor of four pari-mutuel facilities, allowing them to install and operate slot machines as of July 1. The ruling will permit the Hollywood Greyhound Track, Dania Jai Alai, Pompano Park Racing and Gulfstream Park to run slots without being prosecuted under any anti-gambling law.
According to Moe, since Florida legislative authorities failed to produce any regulations on slots, it was up to him to establish a ruling on the matter. Nevertheless, Governor Jeb Bush reportedly said that there might be room for a special session dedicated to slots, but only provided that various leading law makers succeed in reaching a compromise.
A Tallahassee lawsuit, filed by anti-slots group No Casino, has not yet been ruled upon yet. The lawsuit demands the prohibition of slot machine operations until legislative ruling on regulation and taxation is achieved.
