New Orleans Resident Fights against Slots Operation
It was recently reported that Jerry Jacobs, a resident of the Faubourg St. John neighborhood, located in the vicinity of the New Orleans Fair Grounds, submitted a request to prohibit slot machine operation on the premises of the Churchill Downs-owned racetrack.
With the help of attorney at law Jane Booth, Jacobs questioned the legality of zoning requests submitted by the racing facility to run slots, and the constitutionality of Louisiana legislation that authorizes 1,500 slots across the state, in general.
Although Churchill Downs officials offered to allow patrons of the venue to gamble only 16 hours per day and to provide round the clock guarding of the area adjacent to the racetrack, residents of the neighborhood reportedly expressed concern regarding crime that might be caused by increased traffic.
