Broward County Pari-Mutuels Fight for Slots Installation
It was recently reported that an anti-slots group, No Casinos, filed a lawsuit petitioning the Leon County Circuit Judge P. Kevin Davey to forbid slots installation in four Broward County-based pari-mutuels, at least until the legislative authorities produce slots regulations.
Voters in Florida authorized the constitutional amendment permitting Broward lawmakers to decide independently whether or not to allow slots in different gambling facilities across the county. In March, Broward voters agreed to the operation of slot machines in the four pari-mutuels.
In response to the No Casinos suit, the four gambling entertainment providers, Hollywood Greyhound Track, Dania Jai-Alai, Pompano Park Harness Track and Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, filed a contra lawsuit, contending that the No Casinos organization has no right to decide whether or not slots are legal on their premises. Additionally, the casinos claimed that there is no room for a decision of a Leon County Judge over the matter, since they are based in Broward.
