Maine House Passes Slots Proposal, but Leaves it Open for Governor's Veto
Although a proposal to allow slot machines in tribal racetrack facilities in Washington County, Maine, earned approval from the state House of Representatives, it did not gain the two-thirds majority required in order to overrule a potential veto by Governor John Baldacci.

The slots proposal regards a request to permit the Passamaquoddy Tribe to install approximately 1,500 slot machines on the premises of a newly constructed racetrack near Main.

Although supporters of slots proposal, such as Rep. Anne Perry, contend that a slots casino at the racetrack would only improve the declining financial situation in the county, opponents say that a racetrack would only cause further deterioration.

In any case, until Baldacci makes up his mind, the future of slots operation at the Passamaquoddy racetrack can not be yet determined.
