A coalition of slots opponents recently filed a lawsuit, petitioning to abolish a law that legalizes the operation of approximately 14 slots casinos all over the state. As a result of the lawsuit, Pennsylvania's Supreme Court is about to decide whether or not the slots law is constitutional.
The claimants maintain that during the last 4th of July weekend, the legislative authorities defied the constitution by approving slots installation without considering its affect on the public. Also, they suspect that the profits generated by slots taxes might be spent on trivialities, instead of on key matters, such as property tax relief.
In case the court allows the law, there are those who fear that the gaming control board might produce its own state regulations, without regard for local zoning rules. However, if the court rejects the law, the slots licenses will no longer be issued, leaving the gaming board without a job. In any case, the future of slots installation in Pennsylvania is still uncertain.
