Board to Assess Future Impact of Slots Casino in Pittsburgh
A board appointed by Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy recently convened in order to assess the influence constructing a slots casino in Pittsburgh will have on the city. Mayor Tom Murphy requested that the board issue a report that clearly demonstrates the potential impact of the slots casino on the city and its residents. According to the Mayor, the report must be submitted by Sept. 30, before the issuance of a permit by the state.
Members of the board are expected to estimate the social and economic effects of a local slots facility, and determine whether the city would benefit from it. The board also intends to arrange several public forums in order to receive remarks from citizens concerning the casino. Specific dates for such events have not yet been decided.
Moreover, before making any final decision, the members are looking for an expert that would provide them with a general idea regarding the slots casino market. However, not all of them agree that consulting an expert is the best solution. Richard Stanizzo, of the board, was reported as saying that turning to the future operators of the casino would be preferred, as they are more familiar with the gambling industry.
In any case, before submitting their report, board members mean to travel to Orlando and Detroit, in order to see for themselves how casinos are operated in other locations.
