A suggested tax percentage on slot machine revenues in Broward County leaped up to 55 percent during the committee’s final discussion on the House bill. The money collected by means of this tax, was allotted to benefit educational institutions in the area. In November, the proposal was accepted by voters, giving the casinos a permit to manage slot machines in several racetracks located in two counties, Miami Dade and Broward.
The Senate's opposing suggestion, which was already accepted on Friday, recommended that the profits from slot machine taxes should be saved exclusively for building and preserving schools in the area. The settled tax tariff varies between 30 and 35 percent. It was also reported that the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee offered to increase the tax, but chose to postpone any discussion on this matter.
There are contradicting opinions on the tax percentage issue. On the one hand, Mr. Adkins, an executive of Hollywood Greyhound Track, was quoted as saying that a 55 percent tax tariff is not practical. Conversely, Mr. Attkisson R- Kissimmee reportedly claimed that such percentage will result in no less than $70 million revenue from casinos.
